All of the above information is what you need to get this done. But in pushing the starter rod with your foot, you need to be sure it's activating the solenoid and not binding somehow. Like David Sherman said, you might want to use a bar and small block of wood and find a way to pry the arm on the solenoid housing forward to see if that is all working.
