Yellow Pine is a reasonable alternative to White Oak. Not as tough, but well suited to the application. I'd use it in a heartbeat for a truck bed over Red Oak, which is not well suited to this.

The trouble with Yellow Pine these days is that most of what is available comes from fast growth Southern Pines which lack the tight growth rings and resin of Long-leaf Yellow pine, and therefore is softer with less shear strength and weather resistance than yellow pine from before the stands of Long-leaf were cut. Ponderosa is also condsidered yellow pine, and is analagous to the fast growth souther pines. Big trees though, so lots of clear lumber.

A source of good structural yellow pine is a facility that manufactures roof trusses. If they'll sell to the general public you can ask for archetectural grade, which will be free of knots and major checks, but will demand a premium.
