quarter-sawn, is ideally what the bed should be made of. I will admit that I have absolutely no concept of the retail market for hardwoods, it's been 30 years since I bought lumber retail, but I imagine it would be difficult and expensive to find even plain-sawn white oak retail.

IIRC I'm paying in the mid $4's per board foot for q-sawn and maybe $2.75 for plain. I have a suspicion that we could mill and make up bed kits for about what the retail lumber cost would be. The hitch is that I need to buy 500 BF minimum, which would be about 10 beds, and mill and machine in lots of five or ten to keep production costs down. Would also have to make sure shipping wouldn't kill the concept.

If there's enough interest I could look into it further.
