You can measure the resistance of a potentiometer with an ohmmeter. Usually it will be a range somewhere between 0 - 500 ohms up to something like 0 - 1,000,000 ohms. There are many standard ranges in-between these mentioned as well as others outside these ranges. My point is that once you know your range it is easy to find a substitute. The higher the power rating (in Watts) the more rugged the unit is. Potentiometers are generally a very rugged item if the application is correct. They certainly should not fail at the rate you are seeing.
