As you mention and Chris posted, the plates can be thicker if you choose. But I would not go over .250". Then radius the sides to perfectly match the rounded corners on the spring U Bolts. Then the spring pulls down evenly on the entire surface and your good to go. All my old iron is this was....no issues whatsoever. Be sure to check/re-torque the spring U bolts after some miles. Also check with your spring bolt supplier to check if the spring U bolt threads should be dry or lubed when torquing. The U bolts I buy are specified to be lubed and the torque is less that the Dodge spec in the shop manual since dodge went with no lube.
