I would have to agree. The kids these days who are into old trucks like '70s pickups, not '50s pickups. I know the world had changed about 10 years ago when some kid came up to me in the parking lot and said, "Wow, cool old truck!" about the '67 Chevy that I remember my grandpa buying new. Obviously in the collector car market, '60s muscle cars are hot now because that's what all the guys who have money now wished they could have bought when they were 20.

The "brass cars" as gmharris put it, are languishing. Nobody in the market for a collectible car today can remember seeing such cars as daily drivers on the highway. They're "collectible" the way, say, a Colonial dining room table might be collectible -- because they're old, somewhat scarce, and look different from modern production -- but they don't have the emotional appeal of something that reminds you of the good times you had when you were young.

The other thing that worries me about cars and trucks as investments is that I fully expect that within our lifetime gasoline will be unavailable or at least insanely expensive. Most of the world is already switching over to diesel, and the US would too if it weren't for the EPA rules. Even with that, the oil is going to run out at some point, with or without the tar sands, fracking, etc, and I suspect the end will come in decades rather than centuries.

The market for collectible cars and trucks is going to go way down if people can't drive them. Maybe the rich collectors will scrape up enough gas to drive them around once in a while for show, but for an ordinary guy who'd like to drive his '59 powerwagon (or '69 Charger) to work a few days a week, the price and scarcity of gas will make that impossible. Sitting behind the wheel and making "vroom-vroom" noises is not fun enough.
