Because it would float too easily and you'd lose traction and start drifting downstream. What do you figure one of those big tires displaces? I have a video somewhere of a guy trying to cross a glacial outwash river in Alaska somewhere in a modern jeep with oversized tires, half way through, with the water barely over the floorboards, he just starts floating downstream.
