Interesting about the forge. I have read about repairing those huge castings that Caterpillar used to use for the combine frame, axle, transmission, differential, and clutch housing on the old dozers. The machined castings were expensive enough that they were worth repairing. They would heat the stripped casting, which could be the size of a small car, red hot in a big furnace, and then they'd a welder in a foundry suit would weld weld it while it was red hot (that must have been fun), and then they'd put it back in the furnace and let it cool slowly for several days. There was nothing about having to do any machining on it afterward, so maybe this method eliminated warpage as well as stress cracks.
