The difference in the 6v and 12v systems is the direction of current flow. Mismatching a coil to a particular designed system results in reverse polarity and produces a weak spark resulting in hard starts and high RPM misfires. This is due to the internal design of the coil's (primary/secondary) windings in relation to current flow or pressure. When this happens, the spark voltage has positive polarity. It should always be negative, regardless of the way the battery is installed in the vehicle. If it isn't, the sparking current has a lower pressure in relation the spark plug electrode that it must jump to, limiting the coils capability. So yes, a 12v coil on 6v system will work, but not efficiently or effectively. Will a 24v work on 12v? Yes, as long as they are for the same design system. Would it impact the points/condenser - probably not.
