Here's a little gasket paper humor for ya....Once, shortly after I first started foolin' around with cars, over fifty years ago, my friend Bob and I were in his garage working on some wreck when the need to 'tap out' a gasket arose. Looking around, we spotted a roll of #15 roofing felt in a corner of the garage. Having no 'real' gasket paper around, the felt was quickly put into service. I remember Bob rhetorically saying something like, 'know how many gaskets you can make from a three-dollar roll of tar paper'.
I no longer make gaskets from tar paper, but all-in-all, it may not have been that bad a material. I'm not advocating it's use, but look at it's advantages: Non-porous...No additional sealer needed...Readily available...CHEAP; for a modest investment you have a lifetime supply with enough left over to will to your heirs. If a thicker gasket is required; 30# felt.
The above story is true. The names have not been changed to protect the guilty.
