It's a check valve for drain back from the tank.
Now did you find any black or sandy looking debris in the ball valve?
If so it usually indicates the plastic coupler ring is falling apart inside.
Removing the ball is a temporary fix and will completely fail sooner or later as the ring destroys itself.
The newer replacement ring after 1985 will be of steel.
I do believe a pump rebuild is in your future.
