Well, it worked like a champ. Went to the auto parts store and picked up one of the flat blade trim tools. Took a little bit of fiddling but came right off. By the time I got to the last one (of four) it was quick and easy.
My handles are in good condition however, I did not find any springs? Just the rubber piece with a flat metal washer like piece between it and the handle. Should there be some springs in there? (1955 C3-PW6-126)
