I bought a generic trim removal tool, it is a flat forked piece of sheetmetal that works pretty well. With it you only need 3 hands!
One trick is to turn the crank so the pin is vertical and then often once you push the escutcheon back the pin will drop out. It helps to lay a towel or something on the floor to catch the pin.
It isnt hard once you see what you are trying to do!
