hi clark, to date, zinc plating has been used to replace cadmium for most parts. zinc is not as durable and does not have the same lubricity co-effiecient as cadmium, it tends to gall under heavy load.
the military is pretty much the only ones still requiring cadmium due to its unique characteristics.
the main thing is to get your rims clean. split rings work well with good clean rims. most of the rims from the east have major corrosion issues and are weak on the lip that holds the ring on. the link shows what i do to re-store rims. not cheap. cleaned, plated, threads masked and painted.
