Increasing the compression ratio does not provide the increase in power that most people might assume.

Power Gain From Compression Ratio Change

New Compression Ratio
Original
Comp 9 10 11 12

8 2.0% 3.7% 5.2% 6.5%

Increasing you compression ratio can have a significant affect on your gas mileage. Say if you increase your compression ratio from 8 to 10 you will only see a modest (3.7%) increase in power. However you will see almost a 20% gain in fuel milage. Perhaps going from a fuel comsumption of 10 miles per gallon to 12 miles per gallon.

Also the use of domed pistons to achieve increased compression ratio (as we old hotrodders) used to do isn't the way to go either as the dome interfers with flame propagation and actually decreases the power output.
