I was interested in intake polishing when my first 251 blew a head gasket and after removing the head knew I needed a rebuild. But upon close inspection of the casting surface I realized you couldn't get much better intake or exhaust with the fine casting job that was originaly done. There were no rough spots or burrs to restrict or cause turbulence while flowing through the intake or exhaust ports in the block. As has been mentioned, the mating of the int.& exh. manifolds openings to the block port openings must be matched exactly or as close as possible.Tube headers will provide a smoother-freeflowing exhaust than possibly cast headers will.An alum. dual intake manifold is available but requires another carb added.A mild or reground cam should be fine. You might want to checkout a upgrade, point replacement option from Crane Cams,
www.cranecams.com/ignition1/igsysap.htm#antiquevehichles,it is a optical dropin point replacement for better spark.
Other tips to consider for the 230 is,the elect.waterpump and elect. fans available in summit or Jeggs racing catalogs. While they are not directly designed to fit our old PWs,they are designed where it would be fairly easy to adapt it to our engine and should gain 5-10hp from not having to pull the fan or waterpump.Use an elect fuel pump and eliminate anything that robs the engine of power. Of course the life of any engine is always increased with routine maint. such as oil,oil and air filter changes and tuneups.
