The winch on your 1953 PW is a MU2, not a MU, which was used only on the WC 1/2 ton military trucks in 1941-42 and had the collar on the opposite (passenger) side of the drum. The collar moves L-R to engage and disengage the drum from the rotating drum shaft that is turned by the PTO. On your truck, moving the collar to the inside engages the drum and to the outside disengages the drum, allowing the shaft to turn (perhaps driving some piece of equipment mounted to the rear of the PTO) while the drum, cable and chain remain stationary. Move the collar only when the PTO is disengaged and the drum shaft is not turning.
