Port polishing can gain a few precious HP in a full blown race motor. It does little but waste money that can be better spent elsewhere on a novice rebuild, such as having the engine balanced.

However, I do understand that on some Dodge flathead engines there can be a manifold and port mismatch. You will gain some HP by making sure the ports match for size or at the very least that the intake manifold port is smaller than the intake port in the block, and the exhaust manifold port is larger than the exhaust port in the block. The reverse of this produces a lot of turbulance and kills power.
