Paul,
Military "blackout lights" are more to be seen than for seeing. The rear lights (red) have two sets of the pair of triangular slits (total of four). At the "correct" distance apart in convoy the following vehicle will see these four lights as only two. If it appears as only one red light the following vehicle is too far behind. If seen as four separte lights then the vehilces are too close. From the front the lights are white are are for seeing the vehicle. The hooded light or blackout driving light is to help the driver actually see. The hood prevents the light from being seen from above and even from much above around 4 feet off the ground. Often these lights are referred to as "cat eyes" due to the front white slits.
