Upgrading from a 3.9L 4 to a 3.0L 5? That doesn't sound like much of an upgrade as far as torque is concerned. Or is the 4 cyl the 2.2L gasoline 4, in the old 404 Unimog? They are using the 3.0L 5 cyl diesel in the very smallest current Unimogs. But the mid-sized ones are using 3.9L turbo 4 cyls, the big ones of course use the 5.9L 6s.
Who knows what transmission would work. Ideal would be a large number of speeds. With an overdrive if gearing, tire size, engine torque curve and vehicle size and weight would make it useful.
The Unimog transmissions are unusual. It is basically a 4 spd with an integral reduction box to make it an 8 spd, like a Roadranger. And then either a 2 or 3 spd further reduction (very deep ratios, on the order of 6:1 followed by 9:1 for a total of 53 X 14 = 740:1. wow! Multiply that by axle gearing of 5.31-6.40 for total of about 4000:1!
The gearing range on the medium Unimogs is about 110:1, for a total of about 600:1.
My poor F350 expedition truck is a mere 110:1.
Roadranger (Eaton Fuller) makes an RTO-11909ALL which is an 11 spd with low reduction gears of 26, 16 and 10:1, and 8 spds in 1.36:1 increments from 6.35 to direct and an overdrive of 0.73. Might be a good start but it's a 672 lb monster with twin countershafts.
