Not being a "wagoneer" but a Power Wagon owning "Dodger", I found in my 64'WM300 I got 10mpg with the stock 251 around town and around 50+ mph while being truely surprised to get 16mpg on the hiwy at 46mph and under.
A large part is still determined by personal driving habits. Some folks drive hard and brake hard which does nothing for economy or brake wear while others take off easy, drive easy, coast - then brake easy to a stop which saves wear and gives better fuel economy. Anything done to maximize the efficency of an engine most likely adds to its overall HP and torque output using less fuel to do the same amount of work as before anything was done. I believe you can get too picky and expect too much from these engines and trucks. While many upgrades are nice and add safety and performance to these old trucks,we must always remember that,Its not a hipo baja truck, just an old tough worktruck, like a mule as opposed to a quarter horse.
