Replace head studs with bolts?

What do you think of using bolts instead of studs on a flathead? I just pulled the head off a little herc flathead 4 which has 18 studs. I'd had the head off a few years ago, put it all back together with anti-size goop, painted it, kept it out of the rain, and still I had to hammer screwdrivers and crowbars under the edges to get the thing off due to a little bit of rust on all the studs. It seems like bolts would solve the problem. I would think if I torqued them tighter, by an amount equal to the ratio of the fine thread pitch on the top of the stud divided by the coarse thread pitch in the block, the tension in the bolt would be equal to what it was with studs. Has anybody tried this? My M37 looks to have quite an assortment of studs and bolts put in over the years and its head doesn't leak. The only problem I can think of it would be easier to strip out the holes in the block. Maybe the right way to phrase the question is "Why did they use studs?" If there was a good reason they did it that way, there's a good reason I shouldn't change it.
