Islands are not all that difficult IF they have state ferry service. Some small ones do not, and then the arrangements get even more interesting. With the ferries the main issues are time (on the boat and waiting for it) and the ferry fare, which is based on length if you have a large rig. I'm sure a shipper would be willing to deal with that if they were compensated accordingly, but they can't be expected to quote it as if the load were right on I-5.

The other thing to keep in mind with the ferries is that a lot of common things are not legal to transport on ferries. I don't know what they all are, but they include welding gasses, gasoline except in vehicle tanks, and fireworks. Basically anything potentially flammable or explosive is prohibited. On the other hand, many islands (Whidbey, Bainbridge, and the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas) have some way to get there by road, usually so roundabout that the ferry is quicker and cheaper, but usable for hazardous materials. If you think there might be an issue, the time to find out is before you plan the route, not when you're driving onto the boat and the guy says "Wait a minute, you can't bring that on the ferry."
