I have started 3 different engines that were asleep for 15 or 20 years. Once I was satisfied they were turning over by hand, I connected a good battery, rigged a temporary fuel line to a can of gas, poured a little gas into the carburetor, and cranked them over. If your engine starts and runs, you can assess the components for future replacement. I always ended up rebuilding the carb., replacing the plugs and points, but it was just a good feeling early on in the game to know the engine would run. Plus you can listen for knocking, etc., that might tell you more about what it will need.
