All NP model 420's were synchro in 3rd & 4th. The early models were not called 420's Dodge just called them the 4 speed Synchro-shift Transmission. Believe from 1955 onwards they were called the 420 Transmission. Mounting ears on these transmissions were not the same as the earlier units. Dodge had a bell housing change in 1955.
