I like to put something sticky on the cover side and something not sticky on the block side. That way when you take them off, the whole gasket knows which side to stick to. Without that, if it's been on a while, part of it usually sticks to one side and other parts stick to the other side, with the result that you need a new gasket. "not sticky" could be nothing, or grease, or non-hardening permatex.
