A switch should not get hot. It's the coil of the intermittent-duty relay that gets hot. A heavy snap-action toggle switch might well last a long time. Still, a relay makes everything easier. Mount the relay where the high-current wire is going anyway, and then use light wires to connect to any sort of switch you want.
