We have a case 448 garden tractor,18 hp onan engine. This season it started buck then hesitate and then almost stall, then back fire. Then go back to running ok for a few minutes then the whole episode would start over.It sure sounded like it was running out of gas or a fuel restriction.I change the fuel filter and gas line and fuel pump, all these items were over 25 years old, same thing again.
I went to the local dealer and spoke to the mechanic, from my symptons he said sounded like the carb needed a cleaning and rebuild. This is one smart mechanic and has a great small engine business.
I went home cleaned carb same thing!I went on line and checked the tractor forum.Same problem on that forum.Sugestions ranged from bad floats to bad valves ect.Puttered all day making adjustments no signifigant changes in the bucking,no power situation.
For some reason I decided to look at the points,on this engine, you can remove a cover and see the points while the engine was running. The results blew me away every time I would see arcing across the points the engine would start to cut out and starve then back fire.Every one I asked for advice was so positive the problem was fuel,so was I so convinced it was fuel problem I had never thought of it as a condeser gone bad.junoir copey
