Regarding your post the other day about the economy and how the guy backed out on the boat storage building. I was fortunate enough to receive $33 million this year from the Alaska legislature for my college to build a technical education center and student housing with 102 beds. We opened bids yesterday on the tech center. The winning bid was $1.2 million under the estimate, 16% less that what we expected. I never had a project in 10 years come in under and we always had to chop stuff to meet budget.
A local general contractor got the bid and I'm friends with the owner so I'm really glad the workforce will be mostly local. He told me that the business is operating on extra thin margins. Good for owners like me, but not so good for contractors. Our state has a bunch of work being bid out this year and so far the jobs are coming in 15-25% under estimates.
