Ryan, glass bead the rusty one before you start taking it apart, then after it's apart do it again, (housing too) replace the bearings and reasemmble, if the pitting is very deep and it looks like it can't be used, set up the backlash two thousants tight, be SURE that there is plenty of juice in the punkin, don't think about it and don't worry about it!! the key is getting all the rust, I got a diff once that had been run dry!! for a while! the ring gear and pinion had been hot enough to flake the surface but not quite enough to turn it blue, I cleaned it up and set the backlash at .002 and ran it. it was a bit noisey for a few days and then started to quiet down,four weeks and you could not hear it at all, sold the punkin (posi)two years later and had .007 clearance. poor folk got poor ways, if you do it, put it in the back. this is your rodeo so you do what you think is right, but I've done stuff like this with good results and I don't even give it a second thought!! I like to experiment just to see what I can get by with. I would run it in my truck in a heartbeat. Dave.
