An old timer suggested I use pea gravel. It would be similar to using ball bearings but cheaper and easier to find. It worked great. Just make sure it is clean and free of sand. Flush well. It is easy to hear if any are still left in the tank. I can't remember what I used for cleaner but I think it was steam cleaner detergent.
