Gear oil usually looks good no matter how old it is, unless water got in.

Of course fresh oil would be better in the engine. For startup and testing purposes, the cheapest you can buy today is probably better than the best made in 1950. I'll let others weigh in on multi-weight vs straight weight, detergent vs non, zinc content etc. I think all would agree that you can't go wrong with Rotella 15/w40 for long-term use in any engine. I would use cheap stuff (Wal*Mart, Chevron, etc, or even your clean used oil) for startup in case something's wrong with the engine and you have to tear it apart anyway and throw out the oil. Before attempting to crank it, put some oil down all the spark plug holes too, being sure to squirt it over to the side so it goes down into the cylinders and out through the valves.

Epoxy on a yoke will last slightly longer than no epoxy, but a $peedi-$leeve is the only repair that will last for very long. You might find, however, that a modern seal will ride at a different place on the yoke than the old one did, and if you're lucky the new place will be smooth. Generally new seals are thinner than old ones, so they ride father inboard, which means they're likely to be on a better section.
