If an oil company spills a gallon of oil into the ocean, it will probably destroy all marine life for hundreds of miles. If the government sinks an entire abandoned ship with thousands of gallons of oil on board, it will dissipate harmlessly. The oil knows.

I remember how my dad would get frustrated by the reports of the environmental "disaster" of oil spills. He's say, "During the war, you were a HERO if you caused an oil spill." Ships were being sunk right and left, and all that oil dissipated with no great harm done. They had submarines that used gasoline for ballast and others that used mercury for ballast. Most of them are at the bottom of the ocean now. Life goes on.
