I used to run 8PSI with my split rims and Power Kings with reasonable reliablility (with good tubes). With my Boggers I've figured out that 4 is the limit on the front on flat ground and 6 if there is any side hill. on the rear I pretty much can run 4psi no matter what (offroad of course). Have you ever painted your tire treadface at full psi jacked up the truck and set it down on a piece of white paper?? Then take another piece of paper and let the tire down on the piece of paper at trail psi (with painted treadface) and compared the two?? It's been my experience when the tread curls in on it's self in the center thats when you know you're using all the available advantage. Different tires have different surface areas at the same pressure. I found out I can triple my surface area from 30psi to 4psi. And our 3ton trucks need more "float" than a peep or toyota. One advantage however to staying slightly aired up to say 10-12psi is that when you cross a sidehill the truck will have a tendency to hold a line rather than sliding down the hill. That was one reason for my taller narrower tire choice. Another thing I forgot to mention, if you have a choice and know what size of tire your gonna run. It helps to make the "barrel" of the wheel narrower than you would regularly run. example I'm running 38.5/11/16s on a 7" wide rim (tire was made for an 8" wide rim). This gives the bead a little more "pressure" to resist coming off the rim.
