Brazing is great for cast iron, and is stronger than the iron.

But lots of the OE parts were 'malleable iron', which is cast iron that then has lots of the carbon baked out. It is weldable.

The way I tell the different ferrous metals apart is to drill them. Steel makes long spiral chips. Cast Iron makes gritty/dusty stuff. Malleable makes small chips mixed in with the gritty dusty stuff.
