Here are two pictures of a pin before intalation. The "off-center machining" that you describe is normal, however it is not machined, the pin is just worn from 50 years of service. By the sounds of things you need a John's Lever Exchange rebuild. Dad has done several sets where the pin is so worn there is a noticeable step in the middle of the pin.
