By free play, I take it you mean between the pedal and the piston, when the rod is just barely loose, just a small amount of slop?
I also wonder if I slid a toothpick or soft wire in the hole, if I could feel it stop against the piston. If so, then I would stop adjusting when it finally passes through, right? I suppose if that's another effective method, then I could begin by creating the slack you mentioned, then verify with the hole/toothpick?
