There's a difference between better engineering and better engineers. I agree that we are NOT graduating better engineers today than we were before. I never meant to imply that. Seeing the impressive things that were done in the past often makes me question if we engineers are as good as our predecessors were.

However, even though the engineers are not better, I still believe the engineering in many cases is better today, or could be if given the right business environment, but only because we have built on the knowledge and technology from previous generations. Each successive generation builds on the knowledge that was passed to them from prior generations. That is nothing new.

The problem usually comes in when management focuses too much on budget and schedule, or when governmental regulations impose too many constraints. These situations end up forcing poor engineering and poor manufacturing quality into the product.
