Having graduated from a three year technical institute at Old Dominion University, fourth year at Northern Illinois University I went to work at a southern utility. One day I got really depressed at the discrimination I got not being a graduated engineer I talked to my supervisor and turned in my resignation. My supervisor asked if there was anyway he could talk me out of it. I was so value to him. My degree was in electronics engineering technology. However to graduate I had to be proficient in all the welding techniques, machine tools as well as electrical/electronic technology. We also had to design and fabricate printed circuits. My supervisor said that he had never seen anyone be able to do as much as I could. The plant manager said I did not have what it takes to get through engineering school. So much for encouragement; his son flunked out after the second semester. I graduated from N C State university with a degree in Electrical Engineering. I could not believe how inept the students were trying to do the labs. The first rule I learned as an engineer was to always listen to your techs. If techs were just slugs then why was and is this run so important?
