I see the same thing at work, although from a different angle. We have very little tolerance for "grossly incompetent" engineers as our work is heavily dependent on a working knowledge of constructability and engineering calculations. We sometimes get engineers that have no experience building anything or working on anything; it's all school. Oftentimes we have to let them go.

At the same time, we have men who work in the manufacturing plant or in the field who come up with some of the most ridiculous concepts and wild-ass nonsense ideas. I've seen an empty boomtruck stuck in the mud and an ironworker told me he was gonna fire up the truck and press the boom hard down against the bed of the truck to give it more traction. I've seen 50,000lb concrete panels rigged by certified riggers that would most certainly caused a 440ton crawler crane to come right to the ground had I not corrected them.

I can see your point; some of the stupidest people I have ever met were engineers. But at the same time, every single time I do field work or as-built designs I am always met with people who are absolutely devoid of any engineering knowledge or common sense. Building things takes two skill sets and neither is more important than the other.
