Matt. You are absolutely correct about older vehicles rusting and modern ones being built with the ability to withstand the chemicals. However, when I moved to Idaho in 1971, until about 25 years ago, the common practice was to sand the roads in the winter. This practice was foolproof, and even better than chemicals, for the vehicles and for the environment. I did notice that in time the county began to use sand with larger pieces of gravel mixed in. This undoubtedly was in an effort to save money on the material so more of the budget could be used on the commissioners expense accounts. Eventually the city, county and state began to use chemicals. Now, it's a known fact that these chemicals, while devastating to an older, unprotected vehicle, are also grossly ineffective below certain temperatures. Sand was never impeded by temperature. Chemicals have caused many drivers of older vehicles to leave them sit over winter. They also have caused problems with newer vehicles that may have had holes drilled in the fender well to mount mud flaps, etc. And who knows what they do to the creeks, rivers and lakes and the fish living in them?
