My son graduated as a mechanical engineer a few years ago. He found a job a month after graduating in January. He got a job with Genie who make the LAN and other lifts. Their comment when they hired him was how did we miss you on our recruiting trip to you school.

When he started work they put him on the assembly line to learn their products. His trainer would bring him a tool to use and start showing him how to use it. They went through angle grinders impact wrenches and a bunch of other tools. Then they put him on the welder. By that time his trainer was shaking his head. My son knew what each one was and could safely use each one. The trainer said that they never see any engineer who knew what all the tools were let alone use them. He asked my son where he learned and he said my dad. Then he told them about helping rebuild the carryall and how we sliced off the top of a Willys wagon and welded a new one on. The asked him specifically what he did. He showed them pictures that I took of him fitting and welind the top and a door.

I Agee most engineering grads have no practical experience.
