of course there have been advancements in design but my argument is, NOT in materials. the ONLY reason a flathead wont last as long as an overhead valve engine is the design of the combustion chamber and carburetion. the material a 230 are made of are superior in many ways to many modern engines. but the inefficiency of the chamber cause quick carbon build up which causes other problems. computers, cam shaft desing and fuel injection are the main reasons we get more maintenance free miles out of SOME modern cars. DOHC kias and such dont last long at all. neither do many subarus, audis are on a sludge recall, as soon as we went to mostly over head valve in the 50s those cars lasted for 200 to 300 k easily with maintenance. The average used car buyer never ereally knew how many miles a car had becaseu ALL used car dealers wound back speedos. When I bought my first car, 64 chev. I was in denial about the mileage. I think we wanted to believe we were getting a deal. lol. In fact I just heard the russians in the Seattle area take the new digital ones and hook them up to a PC and alter the mileage.
