I would suggest confirming the size of the main feed wire to the breaker, since that needs to be sufficient for the load the compressor will put on it. Like you said, Tim, "If the wire is sized for the 50 amp, you will be fine." If a 50 amp breaker exists, with #12 or #10 wire, he will have a serious problem.
Another question is, does the 50 amp breaker have any thing else loaded on it right now? As in lights, outlets? Or is it all alone, unused?
