I would have to see it in person but they should be snug. It is just that the new NAPA 1011 filters (those produced by WIX) are way too snug.
There is no need to pour oil into the canister over the the top of the filter as oil flows into the bottomm of the canister and then up and out through the filter. These types of filters are GOOD filters, they have a lot of restriction, and oil flows slowly through them.
The screen attached to the lid will push the top fo the filter down to the outlet port - more or less. It does not matter if the port is covered slightly.
