I suppose there are several different ways to look at this, none of them being completely right and none of them being completely wrong. For the most part, I lean toward agreeing with Tim that these things can sometimes escalate into what seems like an abuse of a privilege. Not always, but sometimes.

Personally, I come to the forums to get away from the grind of daily life in suburbia. I like coming to a place where I can have conversation with people who enjoy some of the same things I do. I feel fortunate to have the forums, if for no other reason than it reminds me of the fact that Old Truck Guys still have a rightful place in a world where men are becoming more inclined to manicure their fingernails than to change their oil.

Most of us have seen the same questions asked many times over; questions about split ring wheels, tire size, steering wheel removal, glass replacement, fair market prices and so on. These things have all been covered in detail and can easily be found in the archives. But, on the other hand, it’s the new conversation about old topics that sustains the forums and gives me a good place to go while my neighbors are grooming their poodles, polishing their H3’s, and painting their fingernails.

Personally, I like to hear a story about a man and his dog too. It’s down to earth and I can relate to it. I hope Joe doesn’t consider that to be an abuse of a privilege. I’ve never heard him say anything that would indicate so.

Using the forums comes with a certain amount of responsibility not to abuse it and it seems that posting the same pic a thousand times might be pushing it. Although I don’t know. Again, I’ve never heard Joe say anything to indicate so.

His silence makes me think he’d rather not have to say anything. His silence makes me think that he believes a bunch of Old Truck Guys ought to be able to figure it out.

I don’t pretend to know anything about the amount of time and money that goes into maintaining forums and I certainly don’t know anything about bandwidth. I never had an interest in learning such things. But my common sense tells me that Joe or Gordon or anyone else who provides these services for us should be given a show of respect. When someone does something for me, especially something as nice as getting me out of the suburbs for real conversation with real people, I believe a show of respect is the least I can do in return.

If someone thinks it is a “Weak Nancy” view of things, then they see things differently than me. Being respectful to those who go out on a limb for us is the most basic kind of common sense I can think of. Not weak Nancy at all.

Over the years I’ve used Paul Cook’s page to gather information. Paul Mierop’s page too. I also find the forums and the archives and the t-137 page to be loaded with valuable information about Power Wagons. I consider all of it to be a blessing that should not be taken for granted or abused. I think that is the point Tim was trying to make and I don’t see any sign of weak Nancy in that.

In my mind, the real question here is whether or not someone is intentionally abusing what Joe has set up. If so, I suppose Joe will nip it. Though he shouldn’t have to.
