Vaccuum leak , weak springs in the distributor - lok at the mechanical and vaccuum advance , sloppy timing chain or distributor drive would do it too .
But I suspect you have an early electronic carb that has the very rare poly throttle position sensor in it . They do fail when the bakolite gets old.
