I had to put locktite on my 1982 vintage "Jet" drill press for the same reason. I don't use that machine any more though, now that I have my dad's 1950-something Craftsman, which still doesn't need any tricks to hold the chuck on. I believe they're all a special taper called a "Jacobs" taper used only for drill chucks. The trouble with locktite of course comes when taking the chuck off.

Taper fits are really sort of magical. If the parts have a fine finish and are both tapered exactly the same, they can carry an amazing amount of torque without any splines, keys, or pins. The trick is that the fit and finish have to be really good so that the full length and circumference is in contact.
