My girl friend and I departed Trudys home in Fairfield one rainy Sunday morning many years ago after a great week at the VPW rally with my WDX on the trailer behind. I normally run highway 34 east to I-74 north then east on I-80 to Pa. The rain started to come down in sheets and we both had to make a bathroom stop so I chose the rest stop on I-74 north about half way to the I-80 junction. At that time of the morning on a Sunday it was still dark and there was no one at the stop so I pulled in close to the buildings across several handicap parking spots. We both dashed to the restrooms and were back out in minutes. As we ran to the truck I noticed an Illinois state trooper sitting along side my rig. He tooted his horn and motioned me inside the cruiser out of the rain. I thought-that's it- I'm busted for parking in the handicap spaces. He introduced himself and proceded to ask me about my Power Wagon. Turns out that his grandfather had owned one many years back when he was a young boy and that he had fond memories of that truck and riding in it with his grandfather. I began to calm down a little as we spoke but I think that my girl friend thought that she was going to have to bail me out of jail as she waited for my return. He told me where the construction zones were ahead and wished us a safe trip back to Pa. After a hand shake he gave me one of his cards which I still have. A scary experience for a couple of minutes turned into a nice little visit with a great guy.
