That M38A1, was a M38A1C, it was sat up for the 106 recoiless rifle. To mount the 106, you have to cut the tailgate out. The tailgate is were the spare tire is mounted. With the 106 mounting kit comes a special tire carrier bracket that mounts to the side of the jeep. You do not reuse the old one.
If you look at the photos of the jeep, you can see were the tailgate has been cut out, but some one has tried to put in a replacement one.
